The Home Winemaker's Ethical Foraging Code
Foraging is a privilege, not a right. The countryside provides an incredible variety of fruits, flowers, herbs and berries, but it is our responsibility to protect these natural resources for future generations.
As a responsible forager, I will:
Learn before I pick
I will only collect plants, fruits and flowers that I can identify with complete confidence. If I am uncertain, I will leave them untouched.
Take only what I need
I will never over-harvest. I will leave plenty for wildlife, other people and the continued health of the plant.
Respect wildlife
Many wild fruits and berries are an important food source for birds, mammals and insects. I will always leave enough for nature.
Protect rare species
I will never collect protected, endangered or uncommon plants, and I will avoid disturbing sensitive habitats.
Leave no trace
I will treat every place I visit with respect, avoiding damage to plants, trees, fences, paths and surrounding habitats. I will take all litter home with me.
Harvest sustainably
Where possible I will pick from abundant, healthy plants, spreading my harvest over several locations rather than stripping one area.
Respect the law and landowners
I will only forage where it is legal to do so and will always respect private property and local regulations.
Make wine safely
I will use clean equipment, good winemaking practices and properly identified ingredients to produce safe, enjoyable wines.
Continue learning
Every season brings something new. I will continue to improve my knowledge of plants, fermentation and traditional winemaking.
Together we can enjoy the wonderful tradition of making wine from nature's harvest while helping to preserve the countryside for future generations.
